HISTORY
The
History of this region is very ancient, dated from the time of
discovery and of the French and Dutch invasions in the Northeast
coast, at the beginning of the Brazilian colony.
First as an Indian village, afterwards explored and inhabited
by French pirates who were looking after the pau brasil, exotic
birds, animal skins and other products of the earth.
Latter,
the Dutch settled down in this region for a long period and after
many battles, in 1654they were finally defeated by the Portuguese.
The
new settlers gradually brought other agricultural crops, coconut
trees, sugarcane and fields, for the creation of cattle, transforming
the urban and rural landscape of the region.
The
town of Tibau was founded 200 years ago. The name was given by
the Indians and means “between two waters”, because
the village was situated between the Guarairas Lagoon and the
Atlantic Ocean, forming part of the Municipality of Goianinha
until its emancipation in 3rd October, 1963. The word “south”
was added to the original name to differentiate it from another
Municipality with the same name, located on the north coast of
the state.

| The
small Tibau/Pipa remained this way until the latest seventies. It
was a picturesque community of fishermen, homes without TV, road-floor,
where the lights of the houses turned out at 20 hs, and TV was watched
in the public square. Fishing was the main activity. Every
day, with the flavor of the winds and tide the fishermen left in
small boats to search for subsistence while their women remained
in their houses made of clay, sweeping the ground, seeking water
in the “caçimbas” and washing the clothes in
the river. So was life in the quiet town until the surfers who where
looking after waves, discovered this place. They came from various
regions of the country and foreigners from all over the world also
did so, and gradually they settled down contributing in the development
of the touristic activity.
The
first lodgings and restaurants where gradually emerging, together
with tourists and new residents creating progress and development.
Now-a-days
Pipa have modern hotels and lodgings (some among the best of Brazil),
restaurants from all over the world, exclusive shops, dazzling tours,
agitated night life, refuge of artists and artisans who made of
this small town of Pipa a national and international point visited
by celebrities who come here to enjoy the peace and tranquility
offered by this dazzling nature. |

TIBAU

HOW
TO ARRIVE
Tibau
do Sur/ Pipa is situated in the North-East of Brazil in the
state Rio Grande do Norte at 85 km -using the BR 101 high
way- from the capital Natal (Christmas). But you can get there
as well from Recife (PE) 225km or João Pessoa (PB)
160 km going north, or from Fortaleza (CE) going south. By
car you go to Pipa getting of the BR 101 in the town Goianinha
(60km south of Natal). From Goianinha it is more than 25 km
to Tibau and Pipa. It is enough to follow the indications
on the side of the road. Be careful with the curves and ramps.
Enjoy
the beautiful scenery, the small villages, the clay houses,
the coconut trees, the shrimp farms and the great Guarairas
lagoon, while you are driving. When you see the dunes, the
cliffs and finally the sea you are close to paradise.
Another
option is to go by buggy or 4x4 jeep over the beach (ask around
for the tide because the beach is only accessible by low tide
and the ferry boat depends on the tide as well). Coming from
Natal driving through Ponta Negra you pass by Cotovelo, Pirangi,
Buzios, Barra de Tabbatinga and Barreta until you come to
Malemba beach where you take the ferry boat across the Guarairas
lagoon to Tibau do Sul and Pipa. Many buggy drivers offer
this service as a tour or transfer from Natal to Pipa. |
