ECOLOGY
Preserving
the ecology has been a constant priority in the region,
surrounded by Mata Atlantica (Atlantic vegetation).
Sand dunes, lagoons, rivers, the ocean, pure air and
pristine beaches make this a unique environment.
The
presence of dolphins in the regions waters has stimulated
students from the federal university (UFRN) to create
a special project called PEQUENO CETÁCEOS DO
RN and a study (BOTOS DA PIPA) to monitor the behavior
of the dolphins. An additional project named TARTARUGAS
DA PIPA, was developed by biologists and native residents
along with the Ecological Sanctuary and is also important
for the region. The main goal of this project is to
preserve 5 different species of turtles threatened
with extinction in Brazil, by monitoring the spawning
of their eggs along the beaches of Cacimbinhas e Sibaúma.
The group has the support of PROJETO TAMAR - from
IBAMA, and of NEP - Núcleo Ecológico
da Pipa - and the local business community. The local
schools are doing projects, coordinated by the NEP,
on environmental protection that are aimed at reducing
and recycling garbage. |
